Greetings From The Farm,

Wow, it is finally going to be warm here today. The sun and warmth will be very welcome. This cold weather has not been good for things. We had planted out our early varieties of broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower along with some early peas. Unfortunately, there was just wasn’t anyway for these things to survive with the cold weather we’ve had. We are going to have to wait to see how it affected the fruit crop. At the time that the cold weather hit, we were in full bloom on most of the trees due to the unseasonably warm weather we had been having. Hopefully, we will just have a lower rate of production from them and not a complete loss. Time will tell.

On Tuesday, April 10, we planted the 100 lbs of presprouted seed potatoes that we had so at least we feel like we are on our way to making up some of the lost time. Over the next few days, we will be transplanting out the cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli we have remaining and hope that it doesn’t get to hot to early this year. The lettuce, spinach, and salad greens will also be going in the ground as well as our first planting of onions. We will direct seed out more peas, carrots, beets, and radishes and that will do it for the cool season crops. We are right on the mark for seeding out things that like it warmer to germinate like green beans and sweet corn so it will be a very busy week here on the farm.

We do have tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and summer squash planted in the ground in the greenhouse and those are doing wonderfully. We have zucchini/summer squashes about 4 inches long and the tomatoes are beginning to bloom. Your first delivery of farm fresh produce should make for some wonderful salads.

Growing for you, Beth
