Snow’s Heritage Acres CSA – Week 1 – May 17, 2008

Greetings from the farm!!! Our 1st delivery is finally here. Sometimes it seems like the only thing that is growing very fast around here this year is the yard grass. We are seeing some improvement in that area though. This 1st delivery will still be on the light side. The produce has grown from what we had last week but it is still not in the quantity that we had hoped to see. We are very much looking forward to the next 5 days or so. They are, at the present time, showing temperatures in the mid to upper 70’s with lots of sunshine. With all the moisture in the ground things should really take off.

We have a lot of produce in the ground now. We have planted out all the storage onions, pearl onions, and the 1st of the green onions. We are doing a weekly planting out of lettuce. We have planted the 1st of the carrots, beets, radishes, and turnips and will be making another seeding of it later today. Sweet corn and green beans are also in the ground and we will make one more planting of corn around the 1st of June and more green beans about every 3 weeks. We are going to try to get edible soybeans to grow this year so as soon as we have a few days of really warm weather we will plant them out. We are going to be planting potatoes tomorrow and tomatoes, eggplant, and green peppers on Monday. Cucumbers and summer squash will follow those in about a week. We grow most all of these from transplants so we have some good sized plants when we put them in the ground.

On the fruit side of things, the strawberries have been in full bloom for about a week and a half now and we are seeing the beginnings of berries. It looks like we will have a really good crop this year. Those of you who are wanting to u-pick let me know what day(s) would work best for you to come pick so we can schedule it around the pickings we will do for the shares. We will put a qt in the full shares and a pint in the ½ shares. It may take a week or so to build up to that quantity but that is what we aim for. If you don’t want to pick any extras for yourself but would still like to have the extras just let us know how much you would like and we’ll pick them for you. The prices for the extras are $2.00/qt if you pick and $3.00/qt if we pick. Right now I think a good guess would be May 31 for the start of them. Our plum trees are setting fruit and the apple trees were loaded with blooms so we should have a good crop of them come fall. For whatever reasons the peach and nectarine trees did not bloom this year. I don’t know if it had anything to do with the late frost last spring or what. We have never had this happen before. We will have some blackberries around the 1st of July. We have a pretty small patch so what comes in the shares will be more just for eating. We are going to be working to build up the patch this fall.

We enjoyed meeting those of you who ventured out on May 3 for the Open Farm Day. It was a little on the cold side but we did have a good time. The melons that the kids planted are sprouting and we will be sending out pictures to let you see how your plants are doing. For those of you, who couldn’t come, feel free to visit anytime. Just let us know when so we can be sure to be here. We welcome any of you to come and visit anytime. If you’d like to come on a Saturday, we can hold your share for you and you can pick it up at the farm.

In this week’s share:

Lettuce, Salad Greens, Swiss chard, Spinach, and Over-wintered Onions… (The shares will be small here for the first few weeks but will be getting a lot fuller by week 3.)

How to store this week’s produce:

Lettuce, Salad Greens, Swiss chard, and Spinach: Remove root ends and rinse in cold water. If you have a salad spinner, spin dry. If not, shake off as much excess water as possible. Store in a closed bag in the refrigerator. Being fresh, these items will keep for several weeks as long as they are stored without excess moisture.
Over-wintered Onions: Store in the refrigerator in the bag we send them in. To use just rinse off.

**We field wash the produce only so please rewash before you use it!!**

As the amounts are small this week, the main recipe we can give you is to tear into the size pieces that you want and mix altogether for a great salad. Enjoy!!

Coming on May 24th: Lettuce, Salad Greens, Swiss chard, Spinach, Baby Carrots, Baby Beets, radishes, and Green Onions. (This is subject to change but it is what we are projecting will be ready)

**An additional e-mail will follow this one with directions to each location, times of pick-up, and contact information for each site.**
